PhilosophyThe Levine Academy is proud to be school under the auspices of the Solomon Schechter Day School Association, in association with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. This means that we share in the same 7 Jewish values that Conservative Judaism professes in the Statement of Emet Ve-Emunah. They are: 1) affirmation of faith in God, despite differences in our perceptions and reality; 2) recognizing the authority of Jewish law (Halakhah), as it has developed through changing times and diverse circumstances; 3) valuing pluralism; 4) studying Jewish texts is a precious exercise in deepening spiritual life; 5) Jewish practice is intended to underscore our moral principles; 6) Israel is more than a holy land, as it is a symbol of Jewish unity and it plays a central role in our Jewish present and future; and 7) Jewish law and tradition, properly understood and interpreted enriches Jewish life and can help us to make the world a better place. That being said, there are certain aspects of the statement above that inform our policies: Egalitarianism: Part of pluralism, the changing nature of Jewish law and its relationship with morality has opened a world of innovative ideology and opportunity for women. Levine Academy welcomes and encourages girls to equally participate in all aspects of Jewish ritual, as we affirm that these rituals are religiously available and spiritually important for boys and girls. Shabbat and Festivals (Yom Tovim): In keeping with Jewish law we ask that the entire Levine Academy be mindful of Shabbat and Yom Tovim (Jewish holidays when there is no school). Shabbat and Yom Tovim begin at sundown the night before and end one hour after sunset the next night. We encourage families to gather and invite one another for these celebrations, but we ask that no parties for be scheduled on these days. Kashrut: The Levine Academy serves students across the entire spectrum of religious observance and Kashrut (Jewish Dietary Laws). While we completely respect each of our family’s personal observance and spirituality at home, we maintain a standard of Kashrut that is inclusive of all families and is guided by Jewish law as interpreted by the Conservative Movement. |
